Summer 1919. After frustrating delays, soldiers are beginning to stream back from the Front expecting the "fit country for heroes", promised by Lloyd George. But social discontent, death, hunger and privation stalk the land. Teenage volunteer Jimmy Kelly returns suffering from PTSD to industrial strife and decline. Many 'Pals' have not returned, others are maimed, disfigured or impaired. Widespread industrial and social turmoil simmers. Fear by the ruling classes of a Bolshevik revolution is stoked by articulate working class activists
