A person's protein intake should be restricted based on a 24-hour urine collection. The amount of protein present in the urine is measured by determining the amount of nitrogen in the urine. In a standard diet, 8-10 grams of protein are found per day in the urine. If one has kidney disease, then this amount is much less. The recommended daily amount for a renin with kidney disease is around 1-2 grams per day, or 50% less than the person without kidney disease who produces approximately 1-8 grams per day of protein in their urine.
