Born in Virginia, Sam Houston moved to Tennessee with his mother and eight siblings after his father died when he was 13. He ran away in 1809 and spent nearly three years living with the Cherokee in eastern Tennessee. Houston learned to speak Cherokee and adopted their customs. He was given the Indian name Colonneh, or "the Raven." Houston went on to become a politician, warrior and president of the Republic Of Texas.
