Mike Pearce's encounter with a woman in a New Orleans jazz club will change his life forever. But is it just a chance meeting or is the hand of fate playing a role? Having witnessed her brutal murder, the young English sound engineer later finds a strange ivory figure in his pocket. He has no idea how it got there, but it is identical to one of the figures the woman wore around her neck. Following the murder, he is haunted by a recurring nightmare in which he has to prevent her death. The nightmare is eventually replaced by dreams, which take Mike into the past and the future. They lead him from New Orleans to a small English market town and eventually to the bustling city of Barcelona. Are the dreams also a gift, like the ivory figure? And what price will he have to pay? No gift is ever really free.
