The giant pandas, also known as panda bears, are native to south central China. They are easily recognized by the large, distinctive black patches around the eyes, over the ears, and across its round body and are unrelated to the red panda. These lovable mammals, found in the mountainous bamboo forests in western China, are among the most threatened in the world with only about 1800 pandas left in the entire world. They can grow to 350 pounds as adults but could fit in the palm of your hand when first born. Their diet consists almost entirely of bamboo shoots and adults eat up to 85 pounds a day. They're excellent tree climbers despite their girth. Humans are the greatest threat to panda existence as their habitat keeps being adopted for other uses.
