Having staged their own deaths in Chicago, Carla and Apache go underground, intending to stay off the radar while they enjoy a belated honeymoon. But the gods require an immediate interview where the first of seven impossible tasks are assigned, all of which must be successfully completed in order to save Rivertown from imminent annihilation. With General Mitershoe vowing swift retaliation for the raid in Chicago, rebel forces race to join in the final battle on the banks of the Mississippi River. Strangers pour in, refugees take up arms and Henderson Senior arrives, determined to compensate for the painful past and in the process win his sons' undivided affection. As the clock ticks down to certain invasion, Apache warns Carla they must remain underground in order to succeed, even as Sheriff Snyder convinces John Henderson to assume command of the last great fight against unmanageable odds.
