When Sand's parents discovered her secret gay life by reading her shoebox full of love letters, they kicked her out of the house. Years later, she learned that her mother had passed away from breast cancer, and has stipulated that she not even be allowed at the funeral. Part of the reason Sand's parents were so mad at her was that she didn't chose to tell them her secret themselves - but, she argued, nor had she ever told them that she was straight, that's just what they'd chosen to believe.
