He works for a newspaper called the Twentieth Century, which assigns him to write about travel on the Grand Transasiatic Railway.
What a train route! It runs between Uzun Ada, Turkestan, and Peking, China. On the train he meets a person trying to beat the round-the-world record, a stowaway and other great characters.
But who will be the heroic protagonist of his article?
When a new car is added to the train filled with troops supposed guarding the remains of a great Mandarin and the train travels through lands filled with robber-barons, Bombarnac finds his fellow!
