Publisher's Synopsis

Growing up on her family's South Carolina plantation in the 1780s, 11-year-old Sarah Boone dreams of following in her genteel mother's footsteps and becoming the mistress of a great house. Although she wishes to please her parents and live up to her responsibilities, she struggles to resist her rebellious and tomboyish ways. Sarah spends much of her time alone until a new slave family comes to Boone Hall and Sarah befriends Rose, one of the slave children. Soon she finds herself troubled by the principles of slavery as she becomes aware of the injustices around her. When the British invade and occupy Charles Towne in 1780, Sarah and Rose together must face new hardships as their worlds begin to change.
