Publisher's Synopsis

This volume offers a new approach to polymers. Instead of looking at polymers in terms of their average behaviour in aggregate, the authors instead focus on the behaviour of single molecules in confined spaces. Five chapters in the book concern the detection and analysis of single polynucleotide chapters as they pass through a pore of nanoscopic dimensions, and three chapters deal with proteins as they pass through similar pores during cell function. Other chapters descrine the function of single protein molecules such as actin and titin, and the remaining chapters examine theoretical approaches to understanding the behaviour of single polymer molecules.
