Publisher's Synopsis
A new addition to the ever-popular Pamphlet Architecture series, Michael Cadwell's Small Buildings presents a series of wooden constructions: a pastoral quartet located on secluded streams, meadows, and pastures; furniture; and commissions for public sculpture parks, including ArtPark in Lewiston, NY, Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, NY, and the DeCordova Museum, in Lincoln, MA. Designed and beautifully constructed by Cadwell, the small buildings ground architecture in the realities of the physical world. Building is understood as a verb - as a creative act with its own unpredictable unfolding, demanding its own insightful embrace. Small Buildings is inspired by an indigenous American tradition that ranges from the covered bridges of New England to the kivas of the Southwest. With a minimalist sensibility that does not preclude a sense of humor, the projects ingeniously reinterpret a vernacular palatte of elemental forms, simple tectonics, basic human acts, and fundamental site relationships.
