Publisher's Synopsis
Moira Sullivan was sold to a cat wagon by her step-father, Isaac Powers, after her mother was killed. She was subjected to brutal use by many men between Texas and Oregon where she finds herself for sale again. This time the sale is final, however. Andy Culver is a miner at the Crescent Mine in Oregon. His friends talk him into visiting the saloon where the cat wagon is visiting with fresh stock to be sampled. Andy and his friends make their purchases, but then finds themselves married to the whores. Andy brings his bride home and demands his marital rights. Andy isn't much of a housekeeper and Moira spends her first day as a married woman cleaning. The two fumble through their first weeks as husband and wife and try to make the best of a bad situation. Moira is worried about her younger sister, who is still with their step-father. Andy tries to reunite the sisters, but things don't work out as he hopes. Before leaving Texas, Moira's mother hid her money from the sale of their farm in their wagon. Isaac wants that money. He travels with Mary Margaret, whom he has married, to Oregon in the hope that Moira will find the money and give it to him. Andy and Moira try to make a go of their unconventional marriage, but Isaac doesn't make it easy.
