Thirteen-year-old Lucy Hornberger finds a mysterious trunk full of ancient magical artifacts at a flea market. Soon, Lucy and her best friend Taylor find that they can wield the magical instruments, particularly the Spectrescope, to see an invisible world of spiritual beings, both good and evil. Lucy learns that an evil being named Darnathian will stop at nothing to obtain the Spectrescope, using the daemon ghost of Darwin Stewart to wrest it from her. With the help of Taylor and a mysterious stranger named Iam Reynard, Lucy quickly learns evil is strong and that she has access to powers she never knew existed, until now.
