The police conduct a warrantless search authorized by the exigency of the moment, and give Dastardly his Miranda warnings. Dan, in handcuffs, sneers at Steve McGarrett, who utters those infamous words: "Book 'im, Danno." Now what? What does it mean to "book him"? And what happens after that, during the long interval between arrest and trial? The major steps in the process are shown on the next page in Figure 1.1. This book will explore each of these steps in turn.
