South Carolina, the first state to secede, had no single huge battle, a la Antietam, Chickamauga or Gettysburg. However, it experienced two of the greatest naval battles of the War in Charleston Harbor and Port Royal. South Carolina also experienced the wrath of Sherman's troops as they marched through the state in 1865. Columbia, engulfed in a great fire, experienced damage on par with Atlanta and Richmond.
