Publisher's Synopsis

In the Shadow of Calvary's Cross is a journey not only into the past of a small college that has faded into history, but also the miracles that occurred on and around the campus. Founded by men of vision such as Dr. Edward O. Guerrant, in 1913, the mission was to bring Christian education to a post war world. Dr. Guerrant had been a soldier during the War Between the States, an author, an educator, doctor, and a minister of the gospel. He was led to establish settlement schools within the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky. His passion for his ministry led him to many states raising funds so his vision of Christian Education within the mountain range of Appalachia would materialize. While traveling in the back roads along the North Fork of Kentucky river, some of his ministries, known as Society of Soul Winners, encountered several boys swimming in the river on a Sunday. After talking to them, they realized that most had never heard of Sunday School. The first presentation of the gospel was given along the creek bank. Upon returning from the mountains, the men shared their experiences. Dr. Guerrant recognized the need and that indeed God had guided them to the quaint little villa known as Blackey. Thus began the formation of a settlement school called Stuart Robinson. In the document entitled, In the Shadow of Calvary's Cross, over one hundred years of history within the region known as eastern Kentucky is covered. It serves as a reminder of what men and women of vision can do when God guides their hands.
