Les annees 1922 et 1923 sont une des premieres grandes vagues de creation narrative pour Lovecraft. Epoque ou il est tres actif dans les associations de journalisme amateur, participe aux lectures de Boston, et c'est aussi les premieres rencontres avec Sonia. Une prose qui, sans rien renier de son lyrisme, apprend a faire confiance aux lieux, a maitriser la condensation de l'action narrative pour faire emerger l'horreur nue. Le magazine Home Brew, qui a publie son Herbert West Reanimator est une revue qui s'oriente plutot vers le recit de detective. Lorsqu'il leur propose The Lurking Fear, Lovecraft se risque deliberement dans cette forme a laquelle il ne reviendra plus. C'est aussi une des raisons de se laisser happer par ce recit tout en grandes esquisses. Et cependant, lorsqu'on decouvre ce paysage sauvage, le role des arbres aux formes torturees, comment ne pas se souvenir que cela fascinait le jeune Howard de quatorze ans, lorsqu'a bicyclette il se risque dans les environs de Providence, en explore les ravins caches? Il renoncera au velo l'annee suivante, apres l'accident qui lui casse le nez. C'est dans cette meme periode que Lovecraft ecrit une salve de recits toujours parmi le noyau le plus sombre de l' uvre: Le chien, La musique d'Erich Zann, L'innommable. Lorsque peu apres La peur en embuscade, il commence Les rats dans les murs, on dirait qu'il cherche deliberement a se confronter aux figures les plus archetypiques du recit fantastique. Le vieux manoir recu en heritage, et le nom d'Edgar Poe a peine dissimule en Poer. D'autant que Lovecraft vient de decouvrir ce grand livre qu'est La montagne des reves (The hill of dreams) d'Arthur Machen. Mais a ce moment-la, debut 1924, le tout jeune magazine Weird Tales existera, et Lovecraft dispose d'un vrai debouche editorial pour son travail. Ne boudons pas notre plaisir, meme si cette angoisse latente, ou ce questionnement pose a l'univers meme, ne sous-tend pas encore l'implacable machine narrative, qu'on voit progressivement ici se former.
