Publisher's Synopsis

All over the world skin color has come to play an abnormal role in determining the quality of life for so many. Discrimination based on one's skin color is still rampant. The notion that the light-skinned is most desirable is propagated in part by the fact that the countries where the majority of the citizens are mostly light skinned seem to have more wealth and power that those countries in which the vast majority of the citizens are dark skinned. Where dark skinned individuals are the minority those individuals have had untold suffering over several generations. Those lingering references of light skinned individuals over dark skinned individuals continues today even within many ethnics and racial groups. This poem with photos book does not claim to be able to overcome all of the challenges that are associated with skin color. It is the hope of the book to be able to foster conversations within the United States and around the world that those that are dark skinned should have the same pride of those that are light skinned and then we should all work for a colorblind world where discrimination due to skin color does not exist. This could be a powerful lesson book that could be used within the classroom and other venue to discuss skin color. This poem book, "I am Black" is just part of the ongoing fight to create a colorblind society where individuals are judge by how they treat others and their contributions to the betterment of their society and not by their skin color.
