Publisher's Synopsis

In a last ditch effort to save his failing marriage, Martin has been working all day on a project to develop a holiday home in a remote part of Italy. One afternoon, he decides to take a swim in a local lake to ease his weary limbs. After a while, he comes across a small island, on which he spots a house - and then a girl, who beckons to him to visit. He is a shy man, but she is very welcoming and he is immediately smitten by her beauty. He feels she is way out of his league, however, and this is reinforced when a man appears. But when he lifts her up from her lounger and carries her to a wheelchair, he wonders whether he may be some sort of carer. The house is empty when he calls again, but there are signs of a struggle, and an alarming amount of blood has been spilled. The police investigate but with no body or missing persons reported, they eventually close their file. Martin's infatuation is undiminished by her disability and, when divorce proceeding are started, he sets out to discover who she is and what fate has befallen her. This psychological thriller contrasts the crumbling marriage with the excitement of the chase that ultimately leads to some startling revelations.
