Horemhab was Tut's Crown Prince, or legal heir; his ancestor Ay became Pharaoh right after Tut died because Horemhab was off in Asia as stated. As no modern airplanes yet existed in Egypt, it was some time before Horemhab could return to Egypt and become King, like maybe 3 or 4 years. This was because Queen Ankhesenamon, suspecting an affair of her husband, was caught writing letters to the Hittite King, asking him for a son to marry to become Pharaoh of Egypt.
