Sir Richard Crom well, the founder oi the house, the great-grandfather of the Protector, had been one of the pram chevaliers of Henry's Court, and was an ardent supporter of Thomas Cromwell, the vicar-general. In letters to the Earl he signs himself your bounden nephew he was, in fact, the son of Catherine, Cromwell's sister. Sir Richard's family was Williams of Glamorganshire.
