Publisher's Synopsis

The Life of Charlotte Bronte, Volumes I and II By Elizabeth Gaskell This is the first biography of the English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Bronte sisters who is best known for her novel Jane Eyre. Charlotte Bronte (pictured left) was born in 1816, and her sisters Emily and Anne in 1818 and 1820. The sisters decided to open their own school but the project was not successful. Charlotte later decided instead to publish their poetry, written under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. Charlotte's Jane Eyre, Emily's Wuthering Heights, and Ann's Agnes Grey were then published, still under the pseudonyms. By the mid 1800s, Charlotte was moving in London's literary circles where she met Elizabeth Gaskell. She married The Rev. A. B. Nicholls, curate of Haworth.
