Publisher's Synopsis

A Rose in Winter, a play in three acts, explores the history of Guadalupe, Our Lady of the Americas, from earliest times to her present influence in the contemporary world. Act I begins with a Nahuatl (the Aztec language) poem of indeterminate age, then moves to ancient Egypt, across Africa and into medieval Europe. A dialogue between an Aztec noblewoman and a Spanish lady describes the conquest of Mexico and culminates with a snapshot portrait of infamous Malinche. Act II, told from the perspective of Juan Diego's sister, retells the miraculous story of Guadalupe's appearance. Act III portrays Guadalupe's myriad roles as mentor, guide and inspiration to healers, revolutionaries, artists and the everyday people of today's world. Researching, writing and performing the play has brought the authors into a more direct and personal alignment with Our Lady of Guadalupe, who continues to enrich and sustain us to this day.
