Compiled and presented on behalf of the Ionia County Historical Society by David McCord, with the help of many others. Through historical data and personal stories, and imagery from a variety of sources, the reader can gain a sense of the importance of this century-old institution to this small Midwestern city. The event was founded in 1915 by then-mayor Fred W. Green, who later was elected governor of Michigan, and his business partner Fred A. Chapman. These two, along with the entire community, created an annual festival that went beyond the traditional County Fair to become an entertainment mecca for many. Still, the agricultural community remained a focus year after year. Generations of fair-going families have been involved in the livestock, produce, and traditional arts and skills you'd expect at a fair.Throughout the better part of the 20th century and all its challenges - the great depression, the world wars, prosperity and competition - the Ionia Free Fair remains a fond memory for millions. And it will, we all hope, continue to be a part of peoples lives for generations to come.
