Publisher's Synopsis
Matthew Prior (1664-1721) was a diplomat who worked in Holland and France and was involved in political negotiations at the highest level. He was also a poet, however, and was much appreciated by his contemporaries for his craftsmanship, but above all for his entertainment value. His witty and sometimes cynical treatment of a wide range of subjects lost favour in the 19th century, and this selection from both his published and unpublished work aims to reintroduce to the modern reader this engaging man and writer.
