The Civil War was over. Lee had surrendered to Grant at Appomattox courthouse in Virginia. Four young warriors, tired of the horrors of war, dedicated themselves to a new life in the west, helping others along the way. Freed slaves alsore making an exodus from the south, hoping to survive and find true freedom in the west. Texas was the promised land dor many, although the lonestar state also suffered the ravages of the war.
