Manners and Customs of the Japanese in the Nineteenth Century is a delightful account of the Japanese of Tokugawa Japan. First published in New York in 1841, this small book is one of the earliest accounts of the Japanese ever to appear in America. The various works represented in the text are cited by the compilers "e;H. & B."e; in their appended notes. Their principal source author is unquestionably Dr. P. F. von Siebold, who is constantly quoted or paraphrased.
