Mitchison was a prolific writer, completing more than 90 books in her lifetime, across a multitude of styles and genres. The Conquered was her first novel, first published in 1923. A story set in 1st century BC Gaul during the Gallic Wars of Julius Caesar. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
