Denise convinces her friend, Susan, to help her discover who is responsible for the puzzling, frightening notes she's finding around town in this mystery novel that examines the quality of friendship. As they find more notes but no demands in any of them, Susan sees her friend becoming a psychological mess and calls her mother, Andy Keller, for advice. Andy always willing to take on a mystery and solve people's problems, urges the women to contact the authorities, but Denise adamantly refuses. She thinks the notes are coming from her husband, she knows he loves their children and wouldn't hurt them, and no matter what, she loves him and wants him back. But Harold will never return to her if she accuses him of plotting a kidnapping. Susan, growing tired of her friend's refusal to go to the police, decides to back off the case, until she gets a note threatening her daughter.
