Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1732-1799) was a French playwright, watchmaker, inventor, musician, diplomat, fugitive, spy, publisher, arms dealer, satirist, financier, and revolutionary (both French and American). Best known for his Figaro plays including The Barber of Seville and the Marriage of Figaro, whose revolutionary ideas generated considerable controversy both as plays and in their operatic forms, Rossini's "Barber" and Mozart's "Le Nozze de Figaro" being the best known today.
