George Grote (1794-1871) was an English classical historian, best known in the field for his major work, History of Greece (1846-1856). Amongst his other works are: Essentials of Parliamentary Reform (1831), Life, Teachings, and Death of Socrates (1859), Plato and the Other Companions of Sokrates (1865), Review of the Work of Mr. John Stuart Mill Entitled 'Examination of Sir William Hamilton's Philosophy' (1868) and Poems, 1815- 1823 (1872). Philippe-Paul, comte de Ségur (1780-1873) was a French general and historian, son of Louis Philippe, comte de Ségur. He served with General Macdonald in the Grisons in 1800-1801, and published an account of the campaign in 1802. By the influence of Colonel Duroc he was attached to the personal staff of Napoleon. During his retirement he wrote his Histoire de Napoléon et de la Grande Armée Pendant L'Année 1812 (2 vols., 1824). He also wrote: Histoire de Russie et de Pierre le Grand (1829), Histoire de Charles VIII (2 vols., 1835-1842) and Histoire et Mémoires (8 vols., 1873).
