Publisher's Synopsis

Gaunt (1861-1942) was an Australian novelist, and writer of short stories and travel books. She was one of the first two women students to enroll at the University of Melbourne, after which whe started writing for the press and published her first novel in 1894. The year following her husband's death in 1900 she moved to London hoping to earn a living by writing. She went on to travel in the West Indies and West Africa, publishing several books based on her travels, and produced over 20 novels and short story collections, mostly romance and adventure stories, between 1895 and 1934. This history of Jamaica which is illustrated with photographs was first published in 1922.
