Arlo Bates (1850-1918) was an American author, educator and newspaperman. Born in East Machias, Maine, he graduated from Bowdoin College in 1876 and from 1880-93 held the position of editor of the Boston Sunday Courier. Afterwards he became professor of English at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1900. His novels include The Pagans (1884), The Philistines (1888), and The Puritans (1899), and he also published several collections of poems. Among his collections of criticisms are Talks on Writing English (1897), Talks on the Study of Literature (1898), and Talks on Teaching Literature (1906). The Intoxicated Ghost (1908) is a collection of nine short stories.
