Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Cornwall Parish Registers, Vol. 6: Marriages
In the present volume are contained the Marriages of six parishes which lie on or near the boundary line separating the modern Archdeaconries of Bodmin and Cornwall.
A word of explanation may be required to account for the selection of these particular parishes. In determining what shall be the contents of a new volume several considerations have to be taken into account - to recognise the fact that the Eastern and Western portions of the County have equal claims to priority of treatment; to see that contiguous parishes shall, if possible, be entered in the same volume; to take into account the quantity of available material and the number of entries supplied by the contributing parishes. The first of these conditions is satisfied by issuing volumes of Eastern and Western parishes alternately, the second is largely de pendant upon the third and fourth conditions and therefore must always, it is to be feared, remain a variable quantity. To arrange that each volume shall contain an equal number of entries and at the same time to preserve the integrity of each parochial record is by no means easy, owing to the disparate character of the various parishes. There is a further consideration which, in the immediate interest of those engaged in genealogical enquiries, must not be overlooked. To a genealogist it is obviously advantageous to know where a particular marriage is not to be found, in other words to reduce the field of enquiry to the narrowest possible limits. For this purpose, it is more helpful to print the Marriages of say eight sparsely populated parishes, than to print an equal number taken from four populous ones. Unfortunately it is not always possible to give effect to this desideratum without destroying the continuity of the series. Attention is called to these points, not for the purpose of suggesting any method whereby they may be resolved, but rather to reassure sub scribers. The Editors are fully alive to their importance and to the difficulties which surround them.
