Pour apprécier l'intérèt qu'il peut y avoir à obtenir du gouvernement chinois l'ouverture du Yang - tzü à la naviga tion à vapeur en amont d'han - k'ou, il y a donc à étudier 1° s'il est possible de faire franchir les rapides aux bateaux à vapeur; 2° si le mouvement commercial du lac Tung ting, qui vient déboucher dans le Yang - tzù, à 115 milles en amont d'han - k'ou, est d'une importance suffisante; 3° dans l'hypothèse de l'innavigahilité complète des rapides, si les af?uents occidentaux du lac Tung - ting ne peuvent pas fournir une route nouvelle, plus commode que le ?euve lui méme, pour arriver au principal marché du Ssù - chuân, la ville de Chung - kim Enfin, l'ouverture du ?euve du Tong king offrant un nouveau débouché à la Chine méridionale, il était intéressant de reconnaitre jusqu'où peut s'étendre la sphère d'action du courant commercial ainsi créé, et quel sera, dans la vallée du Yang - tzù, le point de partage pro bable entre ce courant et celui de Shanghaï.
