De Sade chargea Girouard de l'impression de son roman, en 1792. Cet imprimeur, compromis dans une conspiration royaliste, fut arr�t� ainsi que de Sade. Girouard fut condamn� � mort; quant � de Sade, il �chappa gr�ce � des protes tations de d�vouement � la cause r�volution naire il rejeta la qualification de noble, se disant petit-fils d'un valet et fils d'un parvenu vaniteux ayant achet� un titre de marquis, que lui, son fils, ne voulait point porter. Cette th�se �tait contraire � sa supplique sous Louis XVI, alors qu'il sollicitait sa gr�ce, s'appuyant sur sa haute et antique noblesse et sur les illustres faits de plusieurs de ses a�eux.
