There are four sources for the determination Of the meaning of the term (pt'u'tq in philosophical language, i. E., certain discussions by Plate and Aristotle, aimed more or less directly at the problem; the use of the term in the remaining fragments; its use in Plate and Aristotle when net discussing the earlier philosophy; and its use in the general field of Greek literature. In the examination, however, of these sources there are numerous pitfalls of error to be guarded against. We are to deal with a language, grewing, youthful, and in good part unsophisticated and uncritical, over a period extending from the seventh to the third centuries B. C. We must re��n with several different dialects from relatively distant quarters and speak of thoughts and systems which proban never came in contact. There were no Oxford Dictionaries fer Plate with illustrations from the different centuries, and probably very little of the literature.
