While I was at work on these problems Milnes' collection of questions and problems from English examination papers was published. I have to acknowledge my obligations to that collection. I have borrowed some problems from it; others I have adapted. They are marked by an M. With the number in Milnes' collection, thus: (m. Many have been suggested to me by reading that collection. I have given credit whenever the sug gestion was so close that I could specify the question in Milnes' collection which suggested mine. This was not always possible, and so the present general acknowledgment must cover the rest.
