Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Poems and Translations
OF the collection of Poems now offered to the Public, ' the first is an academical exercise composed at the age of nineteen, and which had the good fortune to obtain a prize from the Uni versity of, Oxford. The second is an attempt to embody and compare the different feelings ex cited, in the first instance, by the Opening and event of the war between France and Prussia; and afterwards, by the glorious struggle of the Spanish people in defence of their political liberty. The events which have since taken place in Europe have not been such as to lessen the hopes or change the sentiments expressed in the former editions, and the poem is again pre sented without alteration; though if the charac ters of poet and prophet had indeed been still synonymous, the imaginary guardian of Europe.
