Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from In Market Overt: A Novel
IN a cup of the Bleakshire Downs lies the village of Leadon. For miles around, save for a solitary farm or a clump or two of wind-swept firs, there is no human dwelling and no trees; but, in the cup, as though dropped into it by some skilful hand from the skies, are just enough of houses to fill it. Most of them are labourers' cottages, with thatched overhanging roofs, and in front a strip of garden, with here and there a few bee-hives a sign of comparative wealth, for, though ?owers are rare enough, the downs, over which sweet airs blow all the summer long, are their feeding ground.
