Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Modern School of Art, Vol. 2

Mr. Alma-tadema himself would smile to be called a Belgian painter; on the contrary, he would seriously repudiate the description. Even when the phrase was used, it was not correct, for he was born not a Belgian but a Dutchman, and in the first month Of that very year, 1878, he had become a naturalised English man; and every succeeding season has allied him more closely with our country and its art. If readers were to make the acquaintance of Mr. Alma-tadema under the impression that they were going to talk to a foreign artist, they would speedily perceive their mistake; for when he says our school he means the English school, and when he uses the pronoun we in an artistic and national sense, it stands for himself and the painters who are his fellow-countrymen by adoption.
