The minister of religion, if he heard this reasoning, could not, for a moment, hesitate. He would assure him, that the question stood precisely as he viewed it; and for the satisfaction which he wished, he would refer him to many books written on the subject, and particularly to the works of those venerable men, to whom he had alluded, the Fathers of the Church; acknowledged to have been the fruitful witnesses of the doctrines, which they had received, and themselves delivered. But the works of these Fathers were chie?y written in Greek or Latin, the language of the countries in which they lived; languages not accessible to all readers; and of those works few have been translated.
