Masters of Arts over the Hebdomadal Board. Sixteen Heads of Houses voted for his opponent; only four voted for Mr. Gladstone. In part it marked the failure of the last efiort of a party which rightly saw in Mr. Gladstone their most irreconcilable foe. His own estimate of this party is given in a letter to his father, written on the eve of the poll.
