Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Peter Pindar, Esq., A Distant Relation to the Poet of Thebes: To Which Are Prefixed, Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Author

As far as we hay-e been able to trace the poetiicai ca reer of our author, his works haveaappeared in the fol lowing Order. His fi1h produétion was, an epistle TO the reviewers, a compofition of truly ironical and laughable fatire. -the next offspring of his Mufe, was: lyric Ones TO the royal acadeomicians, which, with all their merit, we muh confefs, in foine of the Hric tures, are deficient in candor, and appear to How mme from a love of fatire, than from a conviétion of the de merits of the objefts of his critical feverity. We dare cite Mr. Hve/i as an inhance, who, though far Hom a perfeé't painter, was entitled to more refpect from ou'r author. His head: work was, lyric odes on the fame fubjeé't, with the fame feverity and humour, and, we are afraid, with the fame want of candor.
