Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Physical Geography
Physical geography is the history of the Earth, its past and present, interpreted by the light of Astronomy, Geology, and Biology. It is not a mere description of the features of sea and land, for these, as we now see them, are only one phase in a series of events Of which we do not know the beginning, nor can we foretell the end. The enumeration, however accurate and exhaustive, of the movements of Ocean and Atmosphere is comparatively useless, unless we can arrive at some general principle to which these are subordinated. Nor is it enough to know the plants and animals which occupy the various regions of land and water we must seek for the explanation of their diversity, and ascertain if the distribution of organised beings in the past throws any light on their relations in the present.
