Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Speech of Hon. John Sherman, Secretary of the Treasury: Delivered at Toledo, Monday, August 26, 1787

Fellow citizens When I informed the Republican State Committee that I could speak once in Ohio during my brief visit, they inquired if it would be agree able to me to speak in Toledo. I promptly answered yes, for I knew that, though your political associations had been greatly disturbed by questions which Sprung out of the hardness of the times and the panic of 1873, you would yet give me a patient hearing, and thus be able better to judge how far we disagree.
