J' ai ete amene a le composer au cours de mes etudes sur la litterature latine du moyen age. Il est impossible d'etudier les moralistes du moyen age qui ont ecrit en latin sans s'occuper de ceux qui ont ecrit en langue vul gaire. Ayant donc lu ou relu, a cette occasion, les ecrits, en langue vulgaire de France, du xu, du x... et du mv siecle, qui ont trait a des questions de morale, il m'a semble naturel d'y puiser les elements d'un livre du meme genre que celui que, en des circonstances analo gues, j'avais tire des romans d'aventure.
