Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Ven; Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, 1557-1595, Vol. 2: English Martyrs

The name John Snowden occurs again as a spy on Catholics a year or two later, in 1591. The question cannot but arise - were they the same person 1 It seems not, for the earlier spy was certainly in the Tower from January, to September, 1588, and he was at the Earl's trial in April, 1589. But John Cecil, who was afterwards one of the Appellant priests, and came to England in 1591 (below p. 171) under the name Snowden, was certainly at Rome throughout 1588. See c.r.s. Xiv., p. 2; and Pollen, The Archpriest Blackwell, 1916, p. 68.
