Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Thomas Chalmers, D.D. LL. D, Vol. 3
The Editor has to apologize for a delay in the publication of this volume, occasioned by a severe illness. He has also to express his great regret that the present is not the last volume of these Memoirs. When he first undertook his task, he divided the life of Dr. Chalmers into three periods: the first, from his birth in 1780 to the close of his ministry at Kilmany in 1815 the second, from the commencement of his ministry at Glasgow to the termination of his professorship at St. Andrews in 1828 the third, from the time of his appointment to the Chair of Theology at Edinburgh till his death in 1847. Each of these periods he intended to embrace within a single volume; and it was not till more than half of the second volume was in a form which prevented alteration, that he perceived that he must either suddenly and very considerably contract the scale of narrative, and so throw aside much of what he thought should once at least be presented to the public, or venture upon a fourth volume.
