Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from A Poetical Translation of the Works of Horace: With the Original d104, and Critical Notes Collected From His Best Latin and French Commentators

Poetry is confined in twenty confiant Syllables, and the Seule reig'plarly ends, with every fecond Line, as if the riter had not Strength enough to fupport himfelf, or Courage enough to venture into a third.

This uncla?ical Kind of Verfification would? Be particularly molt unnatural in a Tran?ation of Horace. It would make him argue in Couplets, and the Perfons of his Dialogues converfe almo? in Epigrams. The Tran?ator has therefore fol lowed the Senio in one unbroken Period. He hath often endeavoured to imitate the profaic Cadence of his Author, when he could with much more Eafe have made him appear lute a. Modern Original. He hath run the Lines into each other, as he believed it the belt Manner of prefervin that lool'e, profaic Poetry, that Negli gence of ilumbers, which hath ever been elleem c'd one of his peculiar Beauties.
